Video of the day: Learn how to pronounce the players’ names
October 9th, 2009 • Uncategorized
Brazilian blog Saque e Voleio posted this really cool video. During the U.S. Open, they interviewed journalists from different countries and asked them to pronounce the names of some of the players from their native countries. I think it’s a great initiative. Some of these are even shocking. And when I say some… I mean the Czech names. Like… what the hell? I don’t think I can even repeat some of those.
Here’s the list of names in the order as they’re said:
Philipp Kohlschreiber, Andreas Beck, Mischa Zverev, Simon Greul, Tommy Haas, Bjorn Phau, Rainer Schuettler, Juan Martín Del Potro, David Nalbandian, Juan Mónaco, José Acasuso, Martín Vassallo Arguello, Horacio Zeballos, Máximo González, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin, Kristof Vliegen, Cristophe Rochus, Yanina Wickmayer, Kirsten Flipkens, Olivier Rochus, Steve Darcis, Thomaz Bellucci, André Sá, Marcelo Melo, Thiago Alves, Bruno Soares, Marcos Daniel, Jie Zheng, Na Li, Shuai Peng, Marin Cilic, Ivan Ljubicic, Mario Ancic, Ivo Karlovic, Fernando Verdasco, Nicolás Almagro, Marcel Granollers, Rubén Ramírez Hidalgo, Carlos Moyá, Rafael Nadal, Sam Querrey, John Isner, Wayne Odesnik, James Blake, Andy Roddick, Melanie Oudin, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Marion Bartoli, Alizé Cornet, Amélie Mauresmo, Gilles Simon, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gael Monfils, Anne Keothavong, James Ward, Andy Murray, Laura Robson, Francesca Schiavone, Roberta Vinci, Tathiana Garbin, Fabio Fognini, Simone Bolelli, Potito Starace, Agnieszka Radwanska, Urszula Radwanska, Marat Safin, Dinara Safina, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elena Dementieva, Mikhail Youzhny, Nadia Petrova, Vera Zvonareva, Alisa Kleybanova, Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Novak Djokovic, Janko Tipsarevic, Victor Troicki, Tomas Berdych, Radek Stepanek, Petra Kvitova, Ivo Minar, Lucie Safarova, Patty Schnyder, Marco Chuidinelli, Timea Baczinsky, Stefanie Voegele, Stanislas Wawrinka, Roger Federer, Ayumi Morita, Ai Sugiyama, Kei Nishikori, Kimiko Date-Krumm, Aiko Nakamura.

Thank you for linking to this! … I’m a reader for the visually impaired, and this will improve my odds of getting things closer to right when I pounce on the next tennis book in the rotation.

It’s “Marcelo Melo” not “Ricardo Melo”.

Alyssa,
in Brasil there are two tennis players with same last name: Marcelo Melo (double) and Ricardo Mello (simple).
Fantastic video. This bolg is amazing!

I’m definitely in support of getting the media to pronounce all of these names right! I made my own video “How to Pronounce ‘Zheng Jie’” to help with her name–she’s playing so well, but her name is getting butchered!

Answer: I have tried and failed several times to keep blogs up. Why? Because I don’t like doing serious journalism unless there’s money showing up in my bank account — and there wasn’t. This blog will have no interest in being impartial or, you know, actually talking about the sport (ok, maybe from time to time). There are tons of other blogs (and news websites) that do this job pretty well already. Here we will discuss the shallow part: the outfits, the gossip, the outrages and who Fernando Verdasco is currently dating.
This is a really interesting and indeed cool video, thanks for sharing!
I always wondered about the pronounciation of some player’s name and some are even in here, so this was definitely helpful! And I like that they started with the Germans LOL
