Happy new year indeed!

I hope everyone here has had terrific New Year’s Eves and that your livers are back at functioning. Now, the TENNIS YEAR is upon us. We must start the year with some Rafa Nadal otherwise this isn’t my blog.

TENNIS-MEN/ TENNIS-MEN/

In Abu Dhabi, Rafa defeated devil personified, Robin Soderling, 7-6 7-5 to cling that shiny trophy you see above.

And in Thailand, Maria Sharapova defeated Venus Williams in an exhibition (GASP!) 6-3 6-4. It’s the year of UNEXPECTED EXHO RESULTS so far. (Let’s ignore the fact it’s the second day of the year — shhh!)

Last post of 2009, cheers!

*no caption needed* (I don’t know if the default ‘NOM OM OM’ is appropriate here)

Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer gave press conferences today in Abu Dhabi for the Capitala World Tennis Championship (I like how they make a 3-day exhibition sound like the hottest thing since Wimbledon). The boys will get into court on the first day of 2010 – Federer will play the winner of Soderling and Wawrinka, Rafa will play the winner of Ferrer (replacing Tsonga) and Davydenko.

This ought to be fun.

Now all that needs to happen is the CAPITALA WORLD TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP to actually do a proper job updating that website. That can’t be hard, can it? CAN IT?

Here some pictures of the boys practicing in the shiny court they have there.

Exhibitions that are so EPIC that might as well be called tournaments

It’s almost over. Soon we’ll be back to our normal state and not have the need to have this picture as our mobiles’ wallpapers: THE 2010 SEASON IS UPON US.

*cue to instrumental music*

We’re now getting ready for the EPIC exhibitions coming up. In Abu Dhabi, we have this amazingly strong field + Wawrinka.

Picture 11

Play begins on the 31st and this is how the three days will exhibition work.

Picture 12

If you ask me, I’d say they should give Byes to the semifinals in all tournaments Rafa plays. Ahem.

But the exhibition I’m really, really excited to is, the one and only, Hopman Cup.

*cue to even more instrumental music*

Hopman Cup always brings the hilarity to tennis courts. This year, we had the super siblings Safins getting all the way to the final and being hilarious while doing so:

In 2007, we had, well, Dmitry Tursunov.

This year, here’s the full list of the teams:

Picture 13

So excuse me if I have high expectations of Team Russia this year. I’m hoping Igor will shown a bit of personality on court. Maybe he’ll deserve his own title instead of “Kiri‘s boyfriend”. But, hell, aren’t the teams just AWESOME this year? Let’s put aside the EPICNESS that is Russia for a second here and focus on the others. Sabine + Kolschi? Baby Pusher + Ace boy? Dream Australian Team? Sorana Banana + Romanian dude? LAURA ROBSON + ANDY MURRAY? Why yes, I am excited.

How about a HOPMAN CUP POLL? Fun y/y?

Who do you want to win Hopman Cup 2010?

Happy Sunday

Today, with a perfect 5-0, Spain lifted La Ensaladera for the second time in a row. Happy times ensued.

Smile harder, Rafa.

To people that don’t speak Spanish, “Bon Nadal” means “Merry Christmas” and, well, “Good Rafa”. Finally, it’s explained why I love Christmas so much. BON NADAL TO EVERYONE. MAY EVERYONE HAVE A FINE NADAL.

And a small picspam because, being a Rafa fan, I hadn’t seen my boy bite a trophy for quite some time now. It pleases me muchly — even though I’m not Spanish and my own NT isn’t even able to qualify for World Group playing Ecuador at home and such. But let’s not talk about that.

Not only Fierce Tennis loves Rafa

Forbes Magazine did a list of America’s Most Liked Sports Figures. Being the only non-American in the list, Rafa, came in fourth. Only cutiepie Shawn Johnson and football players Larry Fitzgerald and Kurt Wagner topped him.

APTOPIX China Tennis Shanghai Masters

Here’s what was said about him:

Percent Like: 68%

People see him as: Exciting, handsome, emotional

The 23-year-old Spaniard, who’s already got six Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal under his belt, has recently vaulted into the limelight on the back of a growing rivalry with Roger Federer.

Americans see him as handsome. Awwwww. Indeed.

Hello, my name is Rafael Nadal and I’m a tennis player

Time for daily Rafa cuteness.

Via for the ♥ of tennis, Rafa shows how many tennis balls he can pick up in 30 seconds (wut):

Never change, Rafa. Your charm is in how awkward you are.

More from our boy: in the presser, after defeating Robredo 6-1 6-4.

dl-2

I realize sponsors want to see their products being displayed. But, really, shoving not only a beer, but two, in front of an athlete during a press conference? Kinda unfitting — at the very least.

Also, according to reader Robert, the Rafa pictures from this event were from a launch of the t-shirts I mocked. Thanks!

Fierce Tennis, you say?

Question: What is this awesome piece of the interwebs?

Answer: I have tried and failed several times to keep blogs up. Why? Because I don’t like doing serious journalism unless there’s money showing up in my bank account — and there wasn’t. This blog will have no interest in being impartial or, you know, actually talking about the sport (ok, maybe from time to time). There are tons of other blogs (and news websites) that do this job pretty well already. Here we will discuss the shallow part: the outfits, the gossip, the outrages and who Fernando Verdasco is currently dating.
