Forbes Magazine did a list of America’s Most Liked Sports Figures. Being the only non-American in the list, Rafa, came in fourth. Only cutiepie Shawn Johnson and football players Larry Fitzgerald and Kurt Wagner topped him.

Here’s what was said about him:

The 23-year-old Spaniard, who’s already got six Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal under his belt, has recently vaulted into the limelight on the back of a growing rivalry with Roger Federer.

I think of all times I’ve made of fun Rafa‘s outfits, this one is the most deserving. He participated in this fan event in Shanghai before his win over Blake (three sets, if you care). Went there, said a few words, made a few kids happy and wore a t-shirt that said “Nadal” in pink.

A t-shirt. With his name on it. In pink. (I actually like the plaid shorts.)

I’m not saying that I don’t like the tee, I do. I’d even buy it and proudly wear it as the Rafatard I am. But he wearing the shirt? It’s like the same level of monogram ridiculousness. Except it’s Rafa, so he was probably all “Free t-shirt! Cool! It even has my name on it! Me gusta mucho”. Bless that kid.

Of course due to timezones I can’t really watch the tennis. But, tournaments in Asia have this great advantage most tourneys don’t: Pictures. So. Many. Effing. Pictures. In most countries, you’re lucky if there are five pictures or your favourite player in their first round match. In Asia? There are like 50. Fans appreciate it. Two thumbs up for you guys.

Moving on.

Rafa today (yesterday? this is confusing) defeated Blake 7-5 in the third after wasting three MPs on the second set. He will now play…. wait for it….. Marat Safin for a semifinal spot. Can you hear that sound? It’s the sound of girls and gay guys squealing and flaining. Dear goodness, it’s too high pitched for my ears.

Last night, after Rafa was victorious against Monfils, a streaker invaded the court. The crazy fan planted one on Rafa’s cheek as the boy was changing shirts. Hear that sound? It’s the sound of thousands of fangirls (and fanboys) dying of jealousy. All the funny aside, we don’t need any other Seles incident in this sport. Thankfully for everyone, the streaker only had a camera in his hands. According to the Tennis Channel, the man was arrested and is being charged with trespassing and will possibly face jail time if convicted.  U.S. Open’s head of security informed  they increased the protection and won’t happen again.
What did Rafa think about this?

“For me, it wasn’t a problem. The guy was really nice. He said, ‘I love you,’ and he kissed me.”

Oh, Rafa. I love you and your fine heterosexual ass. Never change.

I’m clearly in the wrong profession

Rafa Nadal just reached the U.S. Open fourth round by defeating countryman Nicolas Almagro 7-5 6-4 6-4. It was tighter than the scoreline suggests. Awful match with a very inconstant Rafa committing 25 unforced errors and making only 18 winners.

In the middle of the third set, he called for a medical timeout for abdominal pain. He removed his shirt and unbuttoned his pants — for sure the most glorious three minutes of the trainer’s life. Almagro decided to use the opportunity to get himself a back rub. Cue to both players on the ground receiving assistance as the sound guy decided to pick some lolzy song choices: the ER theme and Too Sexy For My Shirt.

So, basically, if you ignore that at the handshake, Almagro asked Rafa is he was ok and the boy sort of shrugged it off and shook his head in reply… this match gave us some good times.

I’ll be in my bunk bubble praying for no more serious injures and just plainly enjoying the eyecandy.
