Masha’s taste in books.

“The whole series of the Twilight books by Stephenie Meyer — all of them were fantastic and quite addicting…third one was my favorite.”
– Maria Sharapova, on what she believes is fantastic literature.

Karma
The Buddhist belief that whatever you do comes back to you, e.g. if you do something good, something good will happen to you, and vice versa.
Sharapova yesterday:
“Is her last name Jankovic?”, after Vika took a second injury time-out.
Sharapova today:
After losing to Peng 2 and 4.
“OH BURRRRRNNNNN” doesn’t quite sum up my feelings.
Glow in the dark stick

If we forget the actual tennis for a second, we can focus on the really important stuff: Sharapova‘s day dress.
First, according to TheDailyForehand twitter (I have no desire in fact checking that), the “last time Sharapova debuted a new daytime dress in the 3rd round after night matches in a different outfit, she lost to Radwanska“. Amusing.
Now, let’s talk about the outfit. It’s explained why Sharapova had shoes that didn’t match her silver night dress at all. They were for this lovely ensemble. The bright yellow detail on her white shoes matched… the stripes on her dress… that also matched… the contour of the visor… that also matched the… wait for it… TENNIS BALL. Why yes, I do love it, how can you tell? I just have a couple of questions about the outfit:
- Does it glow in the dark?
- Can I get a “tennis ball” yellow headband with that?
And it’s possible the “Headband Curse” that is going on has the opposite effect on Sharapova. Ever since Vika started wearing the HoS (Headband of Sex), her slump started. But when Sharapova plays without one, she loses. Coincidence? I think not. Discuss.
On the next FierceTennis post, I’ll teach you guys how to make your own Sharapova U.S. Open 2009 day outfit. All you’ll need is a Wimbledon dress, a pink and a yellow highlighter.
Stay tuned.
Go America… wait, what?

It’s almost 4 am as I write this but, what can I say, I wanted to post this before going to bed. So, please, pardon the grammar and altogether fhddfsjdjdjdjdj that is presented at this unholy time.
I’m not American and I’m not used to cheering for Americans in sports. But today? Bloody good day for American tennis.
It all started with the second match of the day on Ashe. 17-year-old Melanie Oudin defeated another seeded player in a row and ousted Maria Sharapova in a thriller three-setter 3-6 6-4 7-5. Sure it was full of unforced errors and double faults, Oudin herself played in a worse level than she did in her match against Elena. However, the crowd was completely into it. As a spectator from the other side of the continent, I can say I was screaming at the TV and tweeting in all caps (see how srs it was?). I think people forget what sport really is about. It’s not about clean stats and perfect percentages. It’s about getting fans excited, anxious, sentimental. It was a match full of drama that gave the local crowd the pleasure of seeing their homegirl leave the court teary-eyed after being victorious. It’s about the emotion, folks.
The last day match (when it finished, it wasn’t so much as day), certainly had the emotional fact down.
6″9′ John Isner defeated the biggest American hope, Andy Roddick, at his own game. It took him 38 aces, almost four hours, and a fifth-set tiebreak to beat the national poster child. And he did. This match was the epitome of American hardcourt tennis. Two Americans, in the Central Court of Flushing Meadows, acing each other to death. And, as a bonus, with the underdog taking the win. Great stuff for the crowd, locals and American TV stations, I guess.
P.S. We’ll close our eyes and pretend Dina-Kvitova never happened. It’s easier on my heart.
Quickies.

My two picks of fun matches today:
- These babies against Sharapova. Believe.
- TEAM QT against each other. Cheering for the blonde.
Random/LOLtastic news:
- Really good article on NYT on how the order-of-play is decided. (via Savannah’s World)
- Andy Murray and Laura Robson to play Hopman Cup 2010. Another cool team and very good experience for the Tiny Pack of British Awesomeness. My heart will be torn between cheering for them or Elena Dementieva and Kiri’s bf Igor Andreev representing Russia.
- Aga Radwanska: “I will never play doubles with Ula again!” Rofl. I love you kids.
- Venus Williams hates paleontologists. Ross Geller not amused.
- PAPArazzi Failderer.

From Hypebeast:
Seven of Nike’s most exciting athletes, including Maria Sharapova, Sofia Boutella, Alexandre Pato, Rafael Nadal, Manny Pacquiao, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James bring a fresh new look to fans in a photographic series created to showcase the “AW77” hoodie on October 1st. The photography, created in partnership with the creative team of David Sims and Karl Templer presents Nike Sportswear’s in it’s true essence: off-court and on athletes.
Pictures from the hot Spaniard during the photoshoot from Slamxhype.
And the outcome + silver headband girl being a thug/gansta/playa/tomboy.
Sharapova’s making of pics can be found here. I lol’d.

Continuing the discussion on the outfits of the USO that are worth mentioning, I’ll start with my favourite one: Sharapova‘s.
For those that don’t know me, I love to hate Sharapova. She’s my personal punching bag I use to mock: awkward running, lolzy net skills, doubtful fashion taste, doubtful sexual orientation. It’s all good hearted and, well, fun. So for her to win the “Best Outfit of the US Open Award”, it’s a great achievement. Gurl probably knows winning Wimbledon at 17 is nothing comparing to my fashion approval. Let’s see the outfit then, yeah?
First, the chavvy part in me thinks this would look even more badass if it was in black+gold. But as pointed out by loltennis, I’m sure Nike has rules where it states that only The Monogram can wear gold. I feel your pain, Masha. But still, the silver headband is GAWJUZ. It’s a nice improvement to see her wearing a tight dress — let’s not forget her last outfit was the spiderwoman‘s and it made her hips look huge. You know it’s a NIKE FASHION FAIL when you’ve made a 6’2″ skinny woman look fat. Part of me is interested to see how the day dress looks… the other part just wants her to lose in the next round so she doesn’t play Lena. Oh, mixed feelings, how I love thee.
From yesterday’s biggest upset, Ana Ivanovic‘s pretty purple dress:
As much as I was loudly cheering for the Baby Bondarenko, shame we won’t get to see the day version of the ensemble. It was pretty.
And the most expected fashion happening in tennis this year (for me), Caro Wozniacki in Stella McCartney.
One word: disappointment. It just looks like a less colourful, less detailed version of number two here with some extra ruffs. I think it’s time for Adidas to start considering some other designers for their high fashion collection. If you guys could pick, who would it be? I’d want Karl Lagerfeld.
Today’s Outfits: The Best Of

I’ll start with Fierce Tennis‘ official girlcrush, Vika.
Same Wimbledon outfit but in different colours. The headband is still sexy and — if possible — even sexier in bright yellow but the top is still unflattering as hell. She should have stuck with the black long-sleeved shirt worn during warmup. THAT was looking good.
The conclusive proof headbands are soooo in.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands has one! (and lol @ the socks, I guess it could always be worse with Beth)
Fila tried to do this “old school” look for Kim Clijsters. I like the bag, the rest is… *yawn*.
Serena‘s dress is equally plain but SHOES! I love them.
And on Kiri‘s first tournament as a non-Stella girl… she still looks hot. Shocker.
Good looks: always helps when you don’t have a designer outfit.
One of my favourites: Kutuzova‘s green dress that was supposed to be worn by Sharapova at the Australian Open. Gawjuz.
Bepa Zvonareva kept it clean and simple. Very pretty as well.
I would have preferred if she wore this though. Maybe on her next match?
And to finish this, rumors say this is what Urszula Radwanska will wear on her match tomorrow:
I see.
I’d comment on Men’s fashion but everything is dull and the only thing worth mentioning is this ridiculous Adidas t-shirt worn by Mathieu. EPIC FAIL, three stripes.
Sharapova coming to Brazil, Chile and Argentina
August 15th, 2009 • 2 comments gise dulko, maria shutupova
According to Chilean Terra (respesctable source, in my opinion), Sharapova will be coming to South American in the end of November to play exhibitions. Newspaper El Mercurio informs she’ll arrive on Argentina on the 30th November and on Chile on the 2nd December to play Argentinean Gisela Dulko. She’ll stop by Brazil too — with no confirmation so far of any Brazilian source.
The amusing part? The article’s first paragraph:
The beautiful former number 1 of the world, Maria Sharapova, will make the dreams of many true and will visit our country in the end of the year to play the sculptured Argentinean Gisela Duko in one of the most attractive matches that have happened in Chile.
Oh lol, sounds like a whole country needs to get laid.
I think this is an interesting match up if you consider: a) Gise is the one that took Sharapova down on Wimbledon this year, and b) BATTLE OF HEADBANDS PART II, yes?

Sharapova Arrested for Breaking and Entering
August 14th, 2009 • 3 comments maria shutupova, vika azarenka
by Bamilla Celle, special correspondent for Fierce Tennis

NEW YORK — Police today happened upon a strange scene in the Plaza Hotel when tennis ace Maria Sharapova was found breaking and entering into a fellow player’s room.
The victim, 20 year old tennis player Victoria Azarenka, was asleep when Miss Sharapova forced her way into the 20th floor suite. Upon hearing an angered grunt, Miss Azarenka quickly phoned hotel security, who in turn phoned the New York City Police. However, instead of finding an intruder, they found something much more disturbing.
According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, Miss Sharapova was found in tears, angrily tearing apart what looked to be some kind of headgear while muttering, “She can’t have this. She can’t have this! It should only belong to me.” Strewn across the room were various headbands that she brought with her.
One witness tells us, “It was dreadful. I was awoken when I heard banging outside my door. When I opened it, I saw the police quickly rush into the room across the hall and drag out a woman foaming at the mouth with some kind of cloth tied around her head. I had no idea it was Maria Sharapova until somebody told me. I must say, she looks far better without my glasses on.”
A source close to Sharapova informed us that she had been dumped from a long term relationship and was jealous of the headbands that Miss Azarenka had been sporting during the French Open.
“She tried to forget about the headbands. She tried visors, baseball caps, everything. But nothing worked. She just had to have that headband. It was painful to watch her go through it.”
Eventually, she donned her own headband, but was still displeased with the results.
“When she saw Victoria wearing that headband, she thought that they would bring her ex back to her. But, when it didn’t work, she started becoming obsessed. I think she had this delusion in her mind that her ex and Victoria were involved, somehow!”
When questioned, Miss Azarenka simply stated, “She jealous that I am hot one, no?” and went back to bed.
While it is unlikely that Sharapova will face imprisonment for her actions, this could have a profound effect on her endorsements. Her status in the US Open is unknown at this time.

Answer: I have tried and failed several times to keep blogs up. Why? Because I don’t like doing serious journalism unless there’s money showing up in my bank account — and there wasn’t. This blog will have no interest in being impartial or, you know, actually talking about the sport (ok, maybe from time to time). There are tons of other blogs (and news websites) that do this job pretty well already. Here we will discuss the shallow part: the outfits, the gossip, the outrages and who Fernando Verdasco is currently dating.
